WordPress has announced that the first release candidate for WordPress 5.6 is now available. The ‘release candidate’ is effectively a soft release which gives a window of opportunity for testing and troubleshooting for the millions of users and thousands of plugins and themes.
Thinking Fox is currently running the Beta version through its paces across a number of test sites all designed to replicate our typical client websites.
WordPress has indicated the main version is due for full release around 8th December 2020: we will keep you updated on this progress.
As is always the case, any of our client sites that are suitable for the upgrade will be automatically upgraded once we have finished our testing to ensure that your site is running on the latest and most secure version of WordPress.
More information on the features and enhancements of WordPress 5.6 can be found here.
UPDATE: WordPress released version 5.6 on 8 December 2020
Entitled Simone, the new release has been heralded as WordPress’ latest and greatest release. Named after the legendary performer Nina Simone, who is known for tunes like “Feeling Good”, “Young, Gifted and Black”, and “Four Women”.
WordPress claim that version 5.6 is bursting with new features! A full overview can be found here.
The word on the street is that 5.6 is likely to cause issues with older sites running older themes, especially themes that haven’t been updated in quite a while, and introduces a new risk to your site.
