Challenging Times for eCommerce Sites

It’s certainly a challenging time for everyone at the moment and whilst the media are making a lot about how ecommerce companies seem to be reaping the rewards of people stuck at home ordering, the reality is slightly different for anyone who isn’t Amazon.

There are outriders of course: BargainFox.com (sadly, no relation) hit the news this week having gone from an almost standing start to multi-million GBP revenues within only a few months but for the many ecommerce sites we monitor we see a slightly different story, one still of hard work and long hours, but now with added competitors and, dare we say it, some fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants-dropshippers trying to claw their way into the “action”.

Going back to basics

So here’s our twopence for what it’s worth:

  • Control your costs.
  • Don’t splash out on new stock unless you know you can shift it
  • Protect your prices. Discount for short spikes, not as a long term strategy
  • Measure everything. Twice. Then measure it again. And not just traffic and conversions: measure actual sales. Cash is king in a downturn.
  • Early to bed, early to rise, work hard and ADVERTISE

It’s easy to forget the basics when you’re in the weeds so make sure you’re setting enough time aside each day to step back and make sure you’re on track.

If you need help with your ecommerce platform, your marketing, your newsletters, or even just want to sound off on how you’re fighting the good fight every day and twice on sundays then get in touch. We have a Zoom and a cup of coffee or glass of wine handy whenever you need it.
